Sebrae launches platform for startups

On May 2, 2023, SEBRAE (Brazilian Support Service for Micro and Small Companies) announced the creation of an umbrella platform to bring together all actions aimed at the startup ecosystem. The tool, called Sebrae Startups, will bring together initiatives for training, connecting, and strengthening businesses at an early stage of a company.

The project reinforces the entity’s strategy of being increasingly in contact with entrepreneurs. This year’s goal is to impact 10 thousand startups with its promotion programs. In 2022, the number stood at 7,777 businesses, created by 12,123 entrepreneurs that came from 1135 different municipalities.

To reach the objective, the entity foresees investments of BRL 312 million, an increase of 22.8% in relation to the amount it disbursed last year. The value will be used to accelerate businesses, make technologies available and encourage companies to develop innovations.

“The resources applied by Sebrae seek to create conditions for businesses in all segments to generate and absorb more innovations, promote the consolidation of innovative, digital and high-impact businesses and protect intellectual property assets, in addition to promoting the modernization of small traditional businesses”, says Décio Lima, president of Sebrae.

Among the startup profiles that the entity usually supports are mostly micro-enterprises, those that earn up to BRL 360,000 per year. According to the compiled data for 2022, they represent 69.5% of the total. Next, medium-sized companies, 17.6%, with annual revenues between BRL 4.8 million and BRL 300 million; and small, 12.9%, with revenues between BRL 360 thousand and BRL 4.8 million.

In 2022, most of the demand for Sebrae services came from the Southeast and South regions and accounted for 73.5% of this demand. Another relevant data is that 33.2% of these businesses were created between 2020 and 2022, as a result of the impact of digital acceleration during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Depending on the moment of “company life”, these startups have different challenges to solve. Startup companies look for help to survive financially until they find the ideal connection between product and demand; those with paying customers seek solutions to scale the business model, and the more developed ones, deal with issues related to hiring people and adapting management in the face of constant changes.

“We have a capillarity in the country like no other entity, so there is a lot to contribute. Entrepreneurship, especially in the area of innovation, is fundamental for the country’s development in the medium and long term,” says Lima.
