Rio de Janeiro is consolidated as a hub of the logistics sector

With new investments of 34 billion of Brazilian reais, designated for different works in logistics sector Rio de Janeiro has been consolidated as a hub of this industry.

Among the companies that have chosen the State of Rio de Janeiro for their undertakings in this sector is the company MRS Logística. In 12th of June 2014, it was launched the cornerstone of Intermodal Rail Hub of the State, in the city of Queimados, in the Baixada Fluminense (It is a region of the State of Rio de Janeiro, that is located on Guanabara Bay – between the city of Rio de Janeiro to the south, and the Serra dos Órgãos range of hills to the north.), which will have capacity to carry two million tons of high value added cargoes per year in axis Rio de Janeiro – São Paulo. The investment of 240 million of Brazilian reais is a result of a partnership between the MRS Logística, the MTO Logística and Tupi Cimentos. The unit shall start its operation in the second half of 2015.

For the State Secretary of Economic Development of Rio de Janeiro, Julio Bueno, the improvement in infrastructure, with the construction of the metropolitan rim and changes in ports are important factors for the attraction of investments to the State. Bueno highlights that a positive factor is the fact that logistics companies are spread across different cities and not just in a single region.

“We have the Libra Group in Cabo Frio, in the Lake region (Região dos Lagos), due to the development of a logistics area next to the local airport, where once worked the National Company of Álkalis. We expropriated the terrain and managed to transform this area. The municipality of Queimados and cities in Central-South Baixada Fluminense, among others, are attracting more and more companies. Today, we can say that there is a clear logistics vocation in the State of Rio de Janeiro. It’s worth to say that the geographical position of the State is very good for enterprises of this size,” says Bueno.

The proximity of the metropolitan rim was instrumental in the choice of MRS by the municipality of Queimados for the installation of the terminal, which will have additional rail and road operations.

According to the company, the train will be used for large displacements and the distribution of the load in trucks. The terminal will move the finished steel products as well as bulks of minerals such as bauxite and iron ore.

In 12th of June also went into operation a new storage and distribution center of spare parts of Nissan, after a month in the experimental stage. The 70 million of Brazilian reais of investment added up to 2.6 billion of Brazilian reais already paid by the company for the auto-mobile factory, inaugurated in April.

Besides the MRS and Nissan, the State of Rio de Janeiro already has in its portfolio ventures in the logistics sector like B2W (Lojas Americanas), in the amount of 200 million of Brazilian reais in Nova Iguaçu, in the Baixada Fluminense, a distribution center; and Usiminas, with resources of 1.7 billion of Brazilian reais for a rail terminal in the city of Itaguaí.

Also in Itaguaí, CSN has the project of construction of logistic platform, with investments of more than 5 billion of Brazilian reais, with a private harbor and a logistical support center.
